| The Spindle Project It took the creative minds of the artists of Flamingo Clay Studio to turn a windfall of 2000 antique wooden spindles into a nationwide call to artists and a Valentine Week exhibit spanning four galleries. The call is out and entries have come from local artists and from as far away as Great Britain and many states around the nation. The goal is 150 artists, but the galleries can accommodate many more than that. The date for entry has been extended to December 31, 2009. Early entry is essential because of the time needed for each artist to receive the spindles. The theme of the Spindle Project is “Spin a Tale of Love.” The spindles are key to the illustration of the topic. Lovers throughout history, real or fictional; animal, mineral or vegetable are expected to intertwine and drape themselves on, over or around these spindles creating miniature worlds of love and fantasy. Full details are available on the project’s website, TheSpindleProject.org. Sponsors have generously donated the money for cash awards ranging from $250 to $1000. A panel of artist and celebrity judges has been assembled. The spindles are one of the dozens of shapes used by the knitting and weaving industry at the early part of the last century. Yarns and threads that fed into the giant looms were wrapped around them. They have become highly collectable antique finds. Joyce Brown, president of the non-profit Flamingo Clay Studio which sponsors the Clay Glass Metal Stone Gallery in Lake Worth acquired 10,000 of them when she worked as a peddler among the Amish out of Intercourse Pennsylvania. She has carried the last 2000 of them with her down to Florida. EBay has only two currently up for bid with a starting price of $8.99. Each artist entering this “Call to Artists” will receive two of them by return mail. Artists and friends brainstorming the use of the spindles were Betty Wilson, owner of the Craft Gallery in West Palm Beach; Linda Manganaro, owner of LKMix gallery in Lake Worth; Ilene Adams, entrepreneur artist, painter and muralist of Wellington; Amelia Costa, clay artists, painter and muralist of Boynton Beach; Joyce Brown, clay and glass artist of Lake Worth/Greenacres. The official photographer of the event is Durga Garcia. All are involved in the Flamingo Clay Studio and most are exhibiting co-op members of Clay Glass Metal Stone Gallery. The celebration of local artists is always a key focus of Flamingo Clay Studio and its Clay Glass Metal Stone Gallery. They have enlisted the help and space of three additional galleries so that no artist will be turned away from this exhibition. The Craft Gallery, LKMix and Gallery Present Global Art Gallery have joined to showcase the many unique works of art expected to arrive at this exhibit. Space for The Clay Glass Metal Stone Gallery has been donated by philanthropist Jay Burnhardt until the building is rented or sold. Proceeds from the Spindle Project will be used as seed money to acquire a permanent home for 3-D artists in the Lake Worth area. The plans include fully equipped working studio space for over 100 artists run in the cooperative manner of the CGMS Gallery. |
